2012-2013 Scholarship Opportunities
While I don’t want to discourage you from applying for the national or statewide scholarships, I do want to encourage you not to ignore the smaller awards offered on a local level. Although many of these scholarships offer prizes of only $100 to $500, some are larger (around $1,000 to $5,000). Local Scholarships also tend to offer money to fewer students than their federal/state counterparts—often one or two students per year. But since far fewer students apply for these scholarships, you may have a better chance of winning these awards than the so-called “big money” national scholarships.
In an attempt to attract the highly qualified high school student, several years ago most private colleges initiated a series of scholarships designed to give this type of student additional financial aid. Most of the scholarships are automatic if, for example, a student has a high school grade point average of 3.1 or an ACT of 21, etc. To keep pace, many public institutions have initiated similar programs. Since it is literally impossible to list all of these scholarships on this web site, be sure to check in the Guidance Office for scholarships pertaining to particular schools. In addition, most of this information is now listed on each institution’s web site.
